I’m going to start by saying that this is my favourite sketch anime, and probably my favourite comedy anime. Compared to the other famous sketch comedy anime with a similar name, Nichijou, Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou(aka Nichibros) is not as good-looking, nor is it as trippy as Nichijou can be. But I think Nichibros is much funnier than Nichijou. Why? Maybe it’s precisely because Nichibros isn’t trippy. It doesn’t have a genius child professor or a robot, nor does it have a posh boy who rides to school on a goat. Instead, it has a bunch of “normal” boys and girls with very vivid senses of imagination and a lot of creativity.
The Dragon Quest scene, for instance, does not rely on explicitly drawing the fantasy landscapes and characters that the boys are imagining. It derives its humour from showing how absurd it looks and sounds when one boy plays a handful of different characters almost simultaneously. And I’m not implying that it makes fun of the kinds of games that children(I, at least, played imaginary games like that in elementary school, not high school) play. Quite the opposite, actually. The Legendary Sword scene, for instance, does show that it’s embarrassing as hell to be caught roleplaying fantasy games in public, but at its core that scene, and, by extension, the show, is a love-letter to that kind of child’s play.
As heartwarming and relatable as that sounds, it doesn’t quite explain why the show made me laugh out loud on several occasions each episode(which is why I’ve actually also rewatched the show). That part of the show is mostly the work of the excellent work done by the voice actors. The 3 main characters are voiced by Tomokazu Sugita, Kenichi Suzumura and Miyu Irino, of which Sugita and Suzumura usually play the boke while Irino is the tsukkomi. This trio elevates the show from chuckle funny to actually ha-ha funny. Oh, and the show also features Yoko Hikasa, Yuu Kobayashi, Kaori Mizuhashi, Rikiya Koyama, Chiwa Saito, Jun Fukuyama, Yuuki Kaji, Aoi Yuuki and more. I want to continue writing, but I’ve been overcome by an irresistible desire to rewatch this show yet again. Until next time!
