Uchuu Patrol Luluco (aka Space Patrol Luluco) is Trigger’s latest short-format anime. It aired in Spring 2016, and back then it was mostly warmly welcomed as a small bite-sized Friday-night comedy. I liked it too, it was cute and funny, but it never really exceeded that level of positive slightly-above-average-ness.
There were a few different reasons for this. The show didn’t really feel entirely like it’s own thing, for one. Sure, it was fun when it not only referenced but had cameos by other Trigger shows like Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia and Inferno Cop, but that made the show feel more like a crossover special than a show in its own right, which was kind of disappointing.
And then, of course, there was the thing where the final episode of Luluco basically revealed that Trigger were creating a TV version of Little Witch Academia (which is airing right now). And with LWA TV ending up exceeding all of my expectations by being a 2-cour-long full-length show, I’ve all but forgotten about Luluco. It wasn’t a bad show, but it wasn’t really memorable either.
