Summer 2017 First Impressions: Part 4

Nanamaru Sanbatsu

This seems to be a very standard kind of sports show, in that it starts with an eccentric guy advertising his high school club, scaring away most people but managing to pique the interest of the main character, and another character. The main character is new to the sport in question but he does have a set of appropriate skills that he has acquired over his middle school years as a librarian. The other character, also apparently a main character, is more experienced.

Not a bad-looking show!

The sport in question is quiz bowl, and in addition to it being a novel concept as far as the shows I’ve seen so far go, the thing I really like about it is that the other main character is a girl. Usually in (physical) sports shows the members of the team are all the same gender (for historic and rule reasons), and that’s kind of unfortunate. But this is different, and that in itself is interesting enough for me to continue this show. I guess it also helps that it looks good and that the quizzes were exciting.

Netsuzou TRap

I’m a big fan of girls love stories, and while I prefer them not to be the kind where the girls have boyfriends and then realise they want to be with each other instead, I recognise that those kinds of stories can have a lot of depth to them, Scum’s Wish being a prime example (even though the girls’ love didn’t last in that show).

Summer 2017 Netsuzou Trap

This could have been a sexy scene, but it wasn’t.

Netsuzou Trap unfortunately shows how these themes that I really like in theory can also be portrayed in a way that I dislike intensely. In this case, the main problem is that one of the girls basically forces herself on the other one, and there’s nothing defensible about it. It just made me feel really uncomfortable. I won’t be continuing this show.

Dive!!

Another sports show, but unfortunately not a very good one. There’s a school club on the verge of being shut down (boring), a pretty standard cast of characters (boring but not unexpected), and a main character whose interest in the sport, diving in this case, is motivated by the fact that he idolises another member of the club (extremely boring).

A character describing his own show.

Not a lot else actually happens in the first episode, and I don’t see a reason to continue watching it. Unfortunate, but I think I have enough shows already for the season.

  1. I agree on Netsuzou. NTR is netorare meaning cuckhold. They tend to be part of the hentai genre. For something that has a complex dynamic, they shoved it in 9 mins. I haven’t seen the other two shows. Good post though!!!.
