Summer 2017 First Impressions: Part 8

Hajimete no Gal

This is trash. That’s not that uncommon, actually. There’s a lot of trash out there, like those dime-a-dozen fantasy shows with near-omnipotent main characters. This is not that a fantasy show, though. It’s about a guy who is a self-professed loser losing a bet of some kind and being forced to confess his feelings to a “gal”.

Yes, this show is.

That’s not automatically a recipe for disaster, though, because teenagers are notoriously horny, and I think good stories can be written about people going through puberty and learning about their sexuality, but this show is not one of those stories. It’s just panty shots, guys being pervy, guys reading porn mags, and guys being deathly insecure about not having had sex. And jokes about all of this. This is not something that interests me.

Gamers!

In terms of the main character being pervy and a self-professed loser, and with regard to him meeting a girl, this is pretty similar to the show above. Fortunately, that’s where it diverges. This show actually has a focus point, that being the games. The characters are gamers, and that’s where the show will derive all of its content from.

These bits were not funny.

And so far it’s not bad. Some of the comedic timing (not the 4th wall-breaking messages) is good, and the faces are funny. Also, the theme about finding friends with similar interests has good potential. We’ll see where it goes. It’s not perfect though. It could easily become a parody of itself.

Teekyuu 9

Teekyuu is back, and it’s very Teekyuu. Also it’s a Tomarin episode, so yay for Tomarin fans That’s about all there is to say about this episode in which Tomarin gambles away 140000 yen.

That they are.

Watch Teekyuu.

  1. I’m sad about HajiGal but won’t deny the premise turning plenty of people off. I’m probably putting a bit of blind faith of sorts into it as I have been… desensitized I guess would be the best word here from reading its manga. But I guess even then some of the stuff in the manga makes me want to punch something.
