Going Down The List: Yuyushiki

(MAL LINK)

I must make a confession, a confession that might make me unpopular: I didn’t actually like Yuyushiki that much. I watched it all when it aired, but I haven’t touched it since July 2013. I wasn’t very excited when I heard there was going to be an OVA many years later (I was more interested in the Kiniro Mosaic OVA), and I’m not even a big fan of all the fan art.

Going Down The List: Shimoseka

(MAL LINK)

That is, the abbreviation of Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai. According to the list, this post should have been about Shigofumi, but again, I’ve already written about that show, and it’s been so long that I’d probably have less to say about it now than back then. So, instead, I will be writing about this unholy collection of sex jokes and fetishism that aired in Summer 2015.

Going Down The List: Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai

(MAL LINK)

Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, aka Haganai, was the second anime I ever watched. Back then, when I was still innocent, I was shocked and delighted by how extreme, vulgar and shameless the show seemed to be. Yozora’s and Sena’s open hostility toward each other, Rika’s sexual innuendo, Yukimura’s gender, and Sena’s lust toward Kobato were completely new things for me. I also liked the numerous references to other shows and phenomena, even though I didn’t quite understand them(I knew of Excalibur in general, but not of the Fate/Stay Night significance of it) at the time.

Summer 2015 Spotlight: Surprise of the Season

This season turned out to have surprisingly many enjoyable shows. I think I said the same thing last season, referring of course to the unusually stacked Winter 2015 season, but it seems that I never learn when it comes to predicting which shows I end up liking. That’s a problem I’ve been having at least since the Summer 2013 season. But it does mean that I usually end up being surprised by at least one show each season.

And this season is no exception. For instance, while I really wanted to like Classroom Crisis, and I hoped it would be good, I wasn’t actually expecting much out of it. It betrayed that expectation by being genuinely entertaining in a way that is fairly new to me: Non-action science fiction. And while it’s not my favourite show of the season, I still look forward to watching it every week. Another big surprise was Shimoneta to Iu Gainen ga Sonzai Shinai Taikutsu na Sekai, or Shimoseka for short. Shimoseka was so off my radar that I didn’t even initially plan on watching it. I did find the first episode quite funny, but I didn’t expect that to last. To my surprise, it did. The show continues to be hilariously absurd. Were it not for the special circumstances surrounding the winning show, I’d probably pick Shimoseka as my biggest surprise of the season.
