I tried to keep my expectations modest when I decided to pick this show up, because I still vividly remember that time last year when there were like 3 male idol shows every season, and every one of them ended up being boring. Then again, Starmyu exists, and I love that, so I thought “maybe there’s hope”. And yeah, it turned out I was right to be hopeful, because the premiere of Side M was pretty good.
I like Idolmaster. Some parts more than others, but I like it nonetheless. But I’m having a hard time remembering exactly why. It’s not because of the songs proper, because while I like the OPs none of the other songs really stuck with me (a problem I had with Love Live too, to some extent). It’s not the story either, because if the original Idolmaster ever had an overarching story I never noticed (Cinderella Girls did have a story, sort of, but it wasn’t fantastic). I also wasn’t so hot on most of the character arcs, except for Chihaya’s and Haruka’s arcs.
Oh thank god, finally something relatively easy to write about for a change. Now, normally I wouldn’t even write about this show in a separate post – I would include it in a catch-all post with the original Idolmaster anime and Cinderella Girls – but as I just mentioned, I wanted (needed, even) something easy to write about, and Puchimas fits that bill quite nicely. It also has very little to do with the story of the original anime, which I could say is another justification for making this a separate post.
Ah, I still remember when I first started watching Love Live. It was in the middle of the Winter 2013 season, I was new to anime and had it not been recommended by someone else(maybe on Reddit or somewhere else), I probably wouldn’t have picked up Love Live. I don’t remember much of the experience of watching it itself, but I do remember thinking that Love Live was all around a solid show. I enjoyed watching it, and – because this is mandatory I think – my favourite in Season 1 was Maki.
I know, I know, I said I wasn’t going to write something like this, but screw it. It’s not like retrospective posts have to come out either on January 1st or never.
Note: I’ve tried to link to as many as possible of the songs I mention, but some of them may be unavailable, of bad quality or had their pitch changed. But I tried my best.
It’s not like I hadn’t been paying attention to OPs and EDs in 2013 and 2014, but I really only started taking my internal rankings of them seriously in early 2015. The reason for this was probably that Winter 2015 featured so many good OPs that I had a very difficult time trying to decide which one I liked the most. And, because I had not yet started blogging at that point, the decision was left unmade. It also doesn’t help that since Winter 2015 ended I’ve listened to and really liked a few more of the OPs from that season. And when it comes to the EDs, you guessed it, most of the shows with good OPs also have good EDs, at least in my opinion. But, maybe saying what I actually think out loud(or on paper, or on a blog) will help me make a decision, so let’s try that.
